SENSOR DDS® in the Agriculture Industry

Agriculture is one of the fundamental sectors of the economy, providing the production of food, feed, raw materials and other agricultural commodities. It encompasses crop cultivation, fruit growing, vegetable production, viticulture, livestock farming and the management of agricultural land. An essential part of modern agriculture is water management, which ensures efficient use of water for irrigation and crop protection against drought.

Agricultural infrastructure includes water reservoirs, retention basins and irrigation canals that serve to accumulate, distribute and regulate water throughout the growing season. These systems ensure a stable water supply to agricultural land, particularly in areas with lower rainfall or during periods of drought. Water is then distributed through open canals, pipeline systems or modern drip and sprinkler irrigation technologies.

Irrigation reservoirs capture rainwater, surface water from rivers and water from watercourses, while also helping to regulate the water balance of the landscape. Canals provide a controlled water supply to individual agricultural plots and can also serve as drainage channels during periods of excessive rainfall. Modern irrigation systems are designed with a focus on efficient water management, minimising losses and protecting soil against erosion.

These reservoirs and irrigation canals are monitored by the SENSOR DDS® system, which enables continuous liner integrity monitoring and early detection of potential defects or leaks. Continuous monitoring helps prevent water loss, improve irrigation management, optimise water consumption and increase the overall safety of the operation.

In older agricultural areas, the reconstruction of historical irrigation systems, restoration of silted canals and modernisation of retention reservoirs are frequently carried out to increase their capacity, safety and environmental sustainability. This sector plays a key role in ensuring food security, protecting the landscape and adapting agriculture to changing climatic conditions.
