SENSOR DDS® for the Power and Energy Industry

The energy sector is one of the key pillars of the economy and ensures the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity for industry, households and public infrastructure. One of the traditional parts of this sector is coal-fired power generation, where coal combustion is used to produce heat and subsequently electricity through steam turbines.

Coal-fired power plants operate by burning coal in boilers, where the generated heat converts water into high-pressure steam. This steam drives turbines connected to generators that produce electricity. The operation also includes extensive technological systems for fuel handling, coal storage, flue gas management and processing of by-products.

A significant part of this infrastructure also includes large-capacity fly ash storage facilities, which are created as a by-product of coal combustion. Fly ash is collected in ash ponds, lagoons or dry storage facilities, where it is safely stored and may later be partially reused, for example in construction. These facilities require carefully designed technical solutions to prevent leaks, dust emissions and contamination of the surrounding environment.

An important part of power plant operation also includes fuel storage tanks, coal storage areas, water management systems and cooling systems, which help ensure stable and safe plant operation. Power plants use various types of tanks for process water, chemicals and combustion by-products, all of which are essential for controlling production processes.

Technological facilities, including tanks, storage areas, water systems and fly ash storage facilities, can be monitored using SENSOR DDS® systems, enabling ongoing control of waterproofing liner integrity, early leak identification and optimisation of the overall energy facility operation.

Modern coal-fired power plants are equipped with advanced systems for flue gas cleaning, particulate capture and emission reduction, helping them meet strict environmental standards. Despite the gradual transition to renewable energy sources, they remain an important source of stable and controllable electricity generation in many regions.
