Pregnant Pond

SENSOR DDS® MIT Exposed Liner Integrity Testing on a Pregnant Pond at a Gold Mine

Pregnant ponds are among the most critical ponds in the mining process. They are used to store chemical solutions containing gold and copper. Due to the aggressive nature of the stored chemicals, no leakage is acceptable in these ponds. A pregnant pond usually consists of two layers of HDPE or LDPE geomembrane. The lower layer is called the secondary geomembrane, while the upper layer is the primary geomembrane.

A SENSOR DDS® leak detection system should always be installed between the primary and secondary geomembrane liners to ensure that no chemicals can escape through either liner into the subgrade. Immediate leak notification is required for this type of structure, which is why the continuous monitoring system SENSOR DDS® RMS or SENSOR DDS® CMS is suitable for pregnant pond applications.

For a one-time integrity inspection of the primary and secondary geomembrane liners, we can use our portable SENSOR DDS® MIT Arc Tester systems for exposed geomembrane testing. To test the primary liner, Sensor conductive geotextile must be installed between the primary and secondary geomembrane liners.

Arc Tester – SENSOR DDS® MIT

General project information:

During the exposed geomembrane inspection on the Pregnant Pond project, a total of 42 defects were identified and precisely located. On the secondary liner, 23 defects were diagnosed, consisting mainly of mechanical cuts and poor-quality extrusion welds. The primary liner showed 19 defects of similar character and origin.

After successful verification of all completed repairs and the final inspection of the entire area, an integrity certificate was issued, confirming the watertightness and full integrity of both liner layers.
