Storm Pad

SENSOR DDS® Technology Applied to a Storm Pond at a Gold Mine

A Storm Pond is a storage pond used to collect stormwater in mines or other industrial areas. The water usually contains a certain amount of hazardous chemicals or other liquids that must be properly contained and stored.

For this reason, a watertight geomembrane is installed in these tanks to prevent leakage into the subsoil and the resulting contamination of the environment. The integrity of the geomembrane must be tested at least immediately after installation. This makes it possible to identify and eliminate damage caused during transportation to the site or during the installation process itself, thereby ensuring 100% watertightness.

SENSOR DDS® MIT Liner Integrity Testing on a Storm Pond at a Gold Mine in Asia

General project information:

  • Inspected area: 72,000 m²
  • Two layers of 1.5 mm HDPE geomembrane liner installed
  • Sensor conductive geotextile installed between the liner layers
  • Clay subgrade
  • The SENSOR DDS® MIT method was applied after installation of both the primary and secondary geomembrane liners

During this project, we identified and precisely located a total of 67 defects in the secondary geomembrane liner and 45 leaks in the primary geomembrane liner. The entire measurement was carried out during night hours due to extremely high daytime temperatures.

The average daily performance reached 8,500 m² per technician. With two field technicians deployed, the inspection of the entire area was completed within four days.  The diagnostics revealed a high number of defects, primarily in the form of linear cuts caused mainly by the mechanical impact of installation tools. Other significant defects identified on both liner layers included poor-quality extrusion welds and leaks in hot wedge welds.
