Hazardous Waste Landfill

Hazardous Waste Landfill

Hazardous waste is a type of waste that, due to its properties such as chemical composition, flammability or toxicity, poses a risk to human health and the environment. A hazardous waste landfill therefore requires a high level of control and reliable technical solutions.

Since 1999, Sensor has been among the global leaders in geomembrane liner monitoring. Thanks to its long-term focus on permanent online systems, it offers solutions where the geomembrane liner is monitored continuously 24/7, making them highly suitable for hazardous waste landfills. Every permanent SENSOR DDS® monitoring system is certified with a guaranteed minimum service life of 30 years (BAM certificate – Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing, Germany).

Such a solution provides continuous supervision of the geomembrane liner condition and is suitable wherever long-term and reliable monitoring is required.

Hazardous Waste Landfill in Europe - SENSOR DDS® FIXED (SENSOR DDS® RMS)

General project information:

  • Hazardous waste landfill
  • Area: 11,400 m²
  • SENSOR DDS® RMS 24/7 monitoring system
  • Sensor grid: 5 x 5 m – resolution of approximately 25 m²
  • 450 sensors and 35 km of cables used
  • 2.5 mm HDPE geomembrane liner

Landfill cross-section (from bottom to top):

  • Compacted clay: 50 cm
  • SENSOR DDS® FIXED system: 5 x 5 m
  • HDPE geomembrane liner
  • Protective geotextile
  • Drainage layer – gravel
  • Hazardous waste
Technical layout of Sensor DDS fixed monitoring system for hazardous waste landfill with sensor grid and geomembrane liner protection layers

During the construction of this landfill, we applied our zero-tolerance leak philosophy, based on more than 30 years of experience in geomembrane liner monitoring. This process consisted of:

  • SENSOR DDS® FIXED – installation of permanently embedded components of the fixed monitoring system in a 5 x 5 m grid
  • SENSOR DDS® MIT – after installation of the geomembrane liner, we tested the integrity of the exposed liner
  • SENSOR DDS® Mobile – dipole measurement was carried out after the drainage layer had been placed over the liner
  • Before waste placement began, continuous monitoring was launched using the permanently embedded SENSOR DDS® RMS system

The SENSOR DDS® RMS system at this landfill has the following features:

  • Online connectivity and remote management
  • 24/7 continuous monitoring
  • SMS/email notifications
  • Full access via Sensor Cloud
  • Fast information about liner damage
  • Security camera
  • Weather station
  • 10″ Full HD touchscreen
  • Event history for the last 12 months
  • Backup batteries – in the event of a power failure, the station can continue monitoring for up to 3 days

The SENSOR DDS® RMS online monitoring system was installed at this landfill in 2014. The installation was divided into 2 stages. The first stage consisted of installing the permanently embedded system components. A total of 450 sensors were installed in a 5 x 5 m grid before the geomembrane liner was installed. Each sensor is connected to the monitoring centre by its own dedicated cable, ensuring the highest possible quality of data transmission.

The second stage consisted of installing and calibrating the monitoring centre. The control panel is connected to a 220 V power supply, but it is also equipped with a sufficient number of batteries which, in the event of a power failure, can power the station for up to 3 days. After the system was launched and all steps required to achieve zero tolerance for leaks were completed, we issued a geomembrane liner integrity certificate for the landfill. Since then, the hazardous waste landfill has been actively monitored 24/7 using the SENSOR DDS® RMS system.
